SURFACE AREA FORMULAS

CUBOID • CUBE

Cuboid: SA = 2(LW + LH + WH).

Cube: SA = 6s².

A cuboid has three pairs of equal rectangular faces.

A cube has six equal square faces.

PAGE 4/16

CURVED SURFACE FORMULAS

CYLINDER • SPHERE • CONE

Cylinder: SA = 2πr² + 2πrh.

Sphere: SA = 4πr².

Cone: SA = πr² + πrl.

For a cone, l is the slant height.

WHAT THIS TOOL DOES

OUTSIDE AREA OF 3D SHAPES

This calculator finds the total outside area of common 3D solids.

Use it for cuboids, cubes, cylinders, spheres and cones.

It shows the formula, substituted values and final answer.

Surface area is measured in square units.

HOW TO USE

CHOOSE SOLID • ENTER DIMENSIONS • SOLVE

Choose the 3D solid first, then enter the dimensions shown.

For a cone, enter the radius and slant height.

Choose rounding, then press SOLVE or Enter.

Use PREV and NEXT to move through help without scrolling.

WORKED EXAMPLES

CUBOID • CUBE

Cuboid: 2(12×4 + 12×2 + 4×2) = 160.

Cube: 6 × 5² = 150.

These answers are areas, so the units are squared.

Example: cm inputs give cm² answers.

MORE EXAMPLES

SPHERE • CYLINDER

Sphere: 4π × 2² ≈ 50.27.

Cylinder: 2π × 3² + 2π × 3 × 7 ≈ 188.50.

Cylinder surface area includes both circular ends.

The curved side is added as 2πrh.

UNITS

SURFACE AREA USES SQUARE UNITS

Lengths in centimetres give an answer in square centimetres.

Lengths in metres give an answer in square metres.

Use the same length unit for every dimension.

Surface area uses units². Volume uses units³.
