WHAT THIS TOOL DOES
FIND THE STARTING VALUE FROM A CHANGED VALUE
This reverse percentage calculator finds the original value before a percentage change.
Use it for original prices before discounts, values before VAT, increases and decreases.
It shows the multiplier and division step so the working is visible.
The key idea is: original = known value ÷ multiplier.
HOW TO USE
KNOWN VALUE • PERCENT • TYPE
Enter the known value, such as a final sale price.
Enter the percentage as a number, such as 20 for 20%.
Choose after increase, after decrease, or is percent of original.
Press SOLVE or Enter to calculate the original value.
METHOD
MULTIPLIER METHOD FOR REVERSE PERCENTAGES
After an increase: multiplier = 1 + percent ÷ 100.
After a decrease: multiplier = 1 − percent ÷ 100.
If a value is a percent of the original: multiplier = percent ÷ 100.
Original = known value ÷ multiplier.
EXAMPLES
COMMON REVERSE PERCENTAGE CALCULATIONS
72 after +20%: multiplier 1.2, original = 72 ÷ 1.2 = 60.
45 after -10%: multiplier 0.9, original = 45 ÷ 0.9 = 50.
30 is 75%: multiplier 0.75, original = 30 ÷ 0.75 = 40.
