SOHCAHTOA FORMULAS
RIGHT TRIANGLE TRIGONOMETRY
SOH: sinθ = opposite ÷ hypotenuse.
CAH: cosθ = adjacent ÷ hypotenuse.
TOA: tanθ = opposite ÷ adjacent.
Use these only for right-angled triangles.
FIND A SIDE
ANGLE AND ONE SIDE GIVEN
To find opposite from hypotenuse, use opposite = hyp × sinθ.
To find adjacent from hypotenuse, use adjacent = hyp × cosθ.
To find hypotenuse, divide by sinθ or cosθ.
Choose the known side carefully before solving.
FIND AN ANGLE
OPPOSITE AND ADJACENT GIVEN
Use tanθ = opposite ÷ adjacent.
Then use θ = tan⁻¹(opposite ÷ adjacent).
Angle answers are shown in degrees.
This page uses degrees, not radians.
WHAT THIS TOOL DOES
RIGHT TRIANGLE TRIG CALCULATOR
This calculator uses SOHCAHTOA for right-triangle questions.
It can find opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse or angle θ.
It shows the formula, substitution and rounded answer.
It is designed for GCSE maths and homework checking.
HOW TO USE
CHOOSE TARGET • ENTER VALUES • SOLVE
Choose whether to find a side or the angle.
For a side, enter angle θ and the known side length.
For an angle, enter opposite and adjacent.
Press SOLVE or Enter to calculate.
WORKED EXAMPLES
SOHCAHTOA IN ACTION
Opposite: hyp=10, θ=30°, opp=10sin30=5.
Adjacent: hyp=10, θ=30°, adj=10cos30≈8.66.
Hypotenuse: opp=5, θ=30°, hyp=5÷sin30=10.
Angle: opp=5, adj=8.66 gives θ≈30°.
