WHAT THIS TOOL DOES

P677
PLAN EXAM PACING

This exam time planner calculates how many minutes you can spend per mark.

It subtracts a buffer first, so you keep time for reading, planning or checking.

HOW TO USE

P677
ENTER TIME, MARKS AND BUFFER

Enter the exam length in minutes, the total marks and the time you want to reserve.

Press SOLVE to see minutes per mark and timing for one question size.

FORMULA

P677
MINUTES PER MARK FORMULA
workingTime = totalExamTime − buffer
minutesPerMark = workingTime ÷ totalMarks

The buffer is optional, but useful for checking or reading instructions.

WORKED EXAMPLE

P677
90 MINUTES, 80 MARKS, 10 MIN BUFFER
workingTime = 90 − 10 = 80 minutes
80 ÷ 80 = 1.0 minute per mark

An 8-mark question would get about 8 minutes.

QUESTION TIMING

P677
USE MARKS TO PLAN QUESTIONS

Question timing is estimated by multiplying question marks by minutes per mark.

If the paper has longer essay questions, treat the result as a pacing guide rather than a fixed rule.

BUFFER GUIDANCE

P677
KEEP TIME TO CHECK

A buffer leaves time for reading, planning, checking answers or filling in answer sheets.

If the buffer is too large, the working time may become too small for the marks available.

WHO USES IT

P677
STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND TUTORS

Students use it to avoid spending too long on early questions.

Teachers and tutors use it to explain how marks, time and exam pacing connect.

FAQ

P677
SHOULD EVERY MARK GET EQUAL TIME?

Not always. Some marks need more writing, reading or planning.

Use minutes per mark as a pacing baseline, then adjust for question type and instructions.
