WHAT THIS TOOL DOES

P678
CHECK MARKS STILL NEEDED

This marks needed calculator shows how many more marks are required to reach a pass mark.

You can set the pass target as a percentage or as a direct mark.

HOW TO USE

P678
ENTER TOTAL, CURRENT AND TARGET

Enter the total marks, your current marks and the pass threshold.

Choose percentage mode for a pass percentage, or mark mode for a fixed pass mark.

FORMULA

P678
MARKS NEEDED FORMULA
passMark = passPercent ÷ 100 × totalMarks
marksNeeded = passMark − currentMarks

If the result is below zero, no more marks are needed.

WORKED EXAMPLE

P678
80 TOTAL, 36 CURRENT, 50% PASS
passMark = 50 ÷ 100 × 80 = 40
marksNeeded = 40 − 36 = 4

The student needs 4 more marks to reach the pass mark.

PASS PERCENTAGE MODE

P678
USE A PERCENTAGE TARGET

Use percentage mode when the pass rule is written as 40%, 50%, 60% or another percentage.

The calculator converts that percentage into a pass mark from the total marks.

PASS MARK MODE

P678
USE A DIRECT MARK TARGET

Use mark mode when you already know the pass mark, such as 40 out of 80.

The calculator compares your current marks directly against that mark.

WHO USES IT

P678
STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND TUTORS

Students use it to see how close they are to passing a test, mock, quiz or exam.

Teachers and tutors use it to explain pass marks, targets and gaps in simple mark terms.

This means the entered pass threshold has already been met.
